The Story Behind Gregory Construction’s Backhoe Conference Table – Aaron Gregory
I don’t consider myself very creative, but I had a clear vision for our corporate office’s design long before I purchased our company’s headquarters.
I wanted to create office spaces and conference rooms that represented our industry, so we got inventive, constructing the conference room’s back wall with concrete textures, rebar, and formwork panels to resemble construction in progress. Door handles made from concrete trowels, and the centerpiece—our conference room table—are highlights of our space.
Inspired by an office that used dozer tracks for a table base, I wanted our conference room table to tie back to my roots, starting out operating a backhoe while working with my dad. So I decided to build our conference table, the heart of our office, using parts of an old backhoe. After finding a perfect discarded piece in a field, another man’s trash was to be reinvented into our treasure. We cut it down and created the framework at a local fab-shop, designing the tabletop to showcase the backhoe’s boom, bucket, and operating levers.
Visitors often reach out to me about how impressive the table is. It leaves a strong first impression, embodying our professionalism, attention to detail, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Stepping into this creative project, initially outside my comfort zone, was incredibly rewarding.
It’s a reminder that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to remarkable achievements. For me, it was about exploring creativity.
How do you step out of your comfort zone?
